What if we actually obeyed?

I had this weird idea to start a blog and so I did. I always struggled with public speaking, it truly terrifies me, but the idea of writing online to random strangers kind of makes me feel better in a way. And so here it is…my first post.

“Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today. But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.” — Deuteronomy 11: 26–28

I’ve noticed that the word Obedience had been weighing on my heart a lot recently. Which is why I decided to make it the word that i’m going to live by this year. I am living this year in full obedience of what God tells me to do and if anyone reads this, I hope that this may serve as a sign for you to start living a life of Obedience towards God as well (if you have not already).

Earlier this week, I was listening to one of my favourite podcasts, the Redefining Wealth Podcast by Patrice Washington. In her episode, Patrice, was talking about Obedience and she said something that really resonated with me and it was along the lines of “What if you had just done it the first time around?”. What if the first time that we felt that gut feeling in our stomach we actually listened to it? What if when God speaks to us, the first time, we don’t question him and we just do? I feel as if there are so many ‘what if’s’ that I should have taken last year but I just didn’t. Mainly because those ‘what if’s’ would mean that I would have to step out of my comfort zone and stand in a field of uncertainty and I was not ready to do that…at all, so I didn’t. But now looking back I just can’t help to wonder what could have happened if I actually just trusted God instead of second guessing him.

The topic of obedience comes up so many times in the bible and i’ve been so passionate about it because obeying God’s word and what he tells us to do is just one of the many ways that we can show him that we love him. It’s not always going to be easy, that’s for sure, but just think of all of the blessings that you can gain from it.

John 14, Luke 6:46 and 1 Samuel 15:22 are 3 passages, out of many, where the topic of obedience comes up. I recommend anyone who reads this blog to read those passages, meditate on them and find out what they mean to you personally.

Here are 3 things that i’m personally going to be doing starting today and until the rest of the year that will, in my opinion, help me obey God more:

  1. I am cutting off as much social media as I possibly can, so that I have more time to read God’s word and get to know him and his own personal voice to me.
  2. I will intentionally make more time throughout my day so that I may sit still in God’s presence which will then give him the space and time to communicate with me.
  3. I will write down any and every spontaneous thought that comes to mind and I will act on it as soon as possible.

In the words of Jerry Flowers, “God can do more with your uncertain yes then you can do with your confident hustle”. Stay safe everyone!
